Self Help Books And Methods That Actually Work

Welcome to freeselfhelpforyou.com.  If you are like me you’ve probably read a lot of self help books and articles, but very few have actually helped you. This site is dedicated to self help that works! It is dedicated to books, articles, or techniques that can actually start helping you in this very instant. Out of all self help books and info I’ve read, by far the most helpful has been about therapy techniques you can use on your own.  The specific therapy that has actually helped me the most is cognitive behavioral therapy, and even more specifically the sub-category of this therapy called TEAM-CBT. The specific self help book this comes from is the original book Feeling Good, and also the updated version Feeling Great by the author Dr. David D. Burns, MD.

What is cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT? The core principle of the therapy is that our thoughts play a major role in our problems, be they emotional, psychological, or behavioral, if not the main cause altogether.  And it doesn’t refer to any specific thought but our habitual thinking patterns. We all have a specific pattern, or cycle of thoughts that we go through in every situation.

One main pattern of thinking for me was foreshadowing very negative outcomes about whatever situation I was going through.  Once I started reading and learning about the therapy I began feeling relief almost instantly because I was remembering and reflecting back on stressful times I went through and the thoughts that I was having.  And most of those thoughts about what was going to happen never happened or at least they weren’t as bad as I was thinking they were going to be.  You can get relief from the stress, anxiety or depression first of all, by at least noticing your thoughts, and it can be even better if you write them down.  As the saying goes, “What gets measured gets managed,” and for a lot of us during most of our lives, our thoughts have gone on and on running wild in our minds. Imagine someone has been stealing things from your house but you haven’t noticed yet. When would you notice that things are missing? Probably when something important goes missing. And what would you do once you notice that things are missing? Obviously you would take action, you would start investigating and start doing something about it. The same goes for our thinking. It can be very different with our thoughts since they are very very sneaky. The best way to do it is to start practicing. Just this simple act of noticing your thoughts is very powerful. Just think back to the last time you were stressed and what thoughts were running through your head.
